KJ @ FM2000-radio.com: History from 1987 to today
Todays FM2000 started out way back as nothing more then a dream a bit of hope and some good luck along the way.
Initially as a young kid at age 7 I got my first Amateur band general class licence in the USA in the late 60's, later in the 70's I played with simple AM transmitters and shortwave transmitters. music was on casette tape and talk, it was fun !! I reverted to being just a listener when i immigrated to australia in the 70's
So At first a passion as a listener to radio since the late 60's, a fleeting effort in broadcasting in the 70's then being a listener again to being at last an involved broadcaster Easter 1987.
How did this happen?. Listening to Craig at CKP-FM was instrumental in this process, and a (you wont believe it how I found out where he was broadcasting from) meeting at his place, and telling him "I wanna do this too - NOW". Well as chichés go the rest is history, he set me up with the basic equipment to get started and away I went, live, on air
We rocked with ELO, Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Elvis and other classic hits fused with Todays then big hits from Michael Jackson, Wax, New Order, The Cure and Whitney Houston.
BCR-FM was innovative and you knew it was on air. We broke the rules and wrote some new ones along the way. We managed to get in the newspapers often front page every year at least once a year for 5 years - now that boosted the audience (oops) and ruffled a few feathers in the other stations (hehe). Talk back was a feature, we once did talkback on FM (unheard of back then) by using CB radio (may I add this was also unheard off also and probably illegal) for people to call us up and we broadcasted it and it worked!! (including the odd expletive - cuss word)
With thanks to a little bit of 'just do it attitude' and some help from Craig (CKP-FM) John (LMR-FM) and Adrian (CBR-FM) who with Paul (RIP)(LCR-FM) made up the then Northern Suburbs Radio network. I became the final member of that group to broadcast at first in Mono on various frequencies finally settling some where around (BCR-FM 96.7 Mhz) using some equipment from (CKP-FM on 96.3 Mhz) we managed to get a signal and some kind of program to air at BCR-FM
By December that same year Boxing day 1987 We were full stereo with thanks to both John and Craig getting the mixing console and transmitter to me. This is the very much one and the same console still in use today.
It should be noted that Craig was hugely influential in my broadcast development, as well as many others that I have met along the way
From the late 80's throughout the the 90's I worked in paid positions at various community based and commercial based broadcasters as well as a short stint with the ABC. in Victoria, NSW and Queensland, My positions ranged from OB's, Announcering, News reading, Production and Sales and Assistant management - the education I got from Don Dwyer held me in good stead for my experiences. The biggest thrill was fronting live broadcasting from the tamworth Country Music Festivals in 1984, 1985, 1986, and 1987 for several broadcasters.
By The end of the of the 90's I retired from broadcasting, to do other interests so after a few years lapse,
after the turn on the century my passion for radio still remained, desiring to get back on air, I took the mothballs off of the equipment and began with the introduction of streamed broadcasts initially with help by promotion on various IRC chat channels and then MCL. aka mycoffeelounge.net where one of my first posts was "Hey I'm on air wanna listen" and that was the start of my integration of forums and broadcasting. Craig now can be found at Radio-forums. and with his station CKP-FM evolving now as a internet only broadcaster on Retro Radio. He also has Retro-TV.
I am still the driving force behind this evolutionary project now spanning well beyond 20 years and here we are still with traditional radio and well as internet streams.
I am sure there will be more surprises in store for the future.
Enjoy
Our Final internet stream broadcast for 2007 which was live from melbourne Go here.
